Gavialis gangeticus

Gavialis gangeticus is an endangered crocodylian from India. It has a thin, elongated snout, and can grow to be 16ft long! Gavialis is interesting scientifically because its evolutionary relationship to other crocodylians has been difficult to resolve as differences occur if you use either morphological or molecular/combined (morphological + molecular) data.

For my masters thesis, I examined the braincase of Gavialis and other crocodylian species, and used geometric morphometrics to analyze shape changes within the braincase for the clade. I was interested in testing whether the braincase held phylogenetically informative data, so that the relationships of this species could be better understood.
